Kinesiology Tape Fun Facts

Do you ever ask yourself ‘what is that bright, fancy coloured tape olympic and professional athletes wear?’

Have you noticed someone wearing a unique pattern over an injured area at the gym?

Well, ladies and gentlemen the answer is Kinesiology Tape, also known as Neuro-Proprioceptive Tape or K-Tape.

1) What is Kinesiology Tape?

K-Tape was first introduced to health care in 2001. Made of an elastic polymer surrounded by cotton, it is heat-activated, 100% acrylic adhesive and hypoallergenic (latex free). Furthermore, K-Tape is water-resistant so you can wear it in the shower or swimming pool, yet it allows for sweat to evaporate through it during exercise. The elastic properties last for up to 3-5 days. However, K-Tape can adhere to the skin for up to 7 days or longer depending on the natural oils of your skin.

2) What Does Kinesiology Tape Do?

  • Improves posture, awareness, and proprioception
  • Provides joint and tissue support
  • Reduces swelling and bruising during the early stages of an injury
  • Assists to improve muscle function

3) How Do I apply It?

Although K-Tape is easily accessible, application of this tape is very important based on your goals. As a Certified Athletic Therapist, I highly recommend you speak to a health care professional that is certified in Neuro-Proprioceptive Taping prior to use. Doing so will prevent detrimental results, prolonging your recovery.

You can apply K-Tape directly over the injured area, ensuring the surface is clean and dry. Overtime, the tape binds and lifts the layers of skin, fascia and muscles causing local tissue adaptations.

4) How Do I Know If I Need Kinesiology Tape?

For the most part, K-Tape is suitable for most people and if effective when treating:

  • Sprains/Strains
  • Edema/Swelling
  • Arthritis/Joint Pain
  • Bursitis/Tendonitis
  • Back or Neck Pain
  • Sports Injuries
  • Muscle Imbalances

The results may vary based on the quality of tape, tape positioning and percentage of tension of the tape when applied. Keep in mind that everyone reacts differently. Therefore, if the tape feels uncomfortable, you can remove it at anytime!

Speak to a health care professional today, to assist you with the application of K-Tape.
